English Literature

The McKendree University Literary Interest Society (LIS) attracts students from all fields and works to promote the enjoyment of literature on campus and in the surrounding community. LIS sponsors numerous events throughout the year, including book and bake sales, book and writing clubs, a featured author series, dinner, and more! The goal of LIS is to provide an opportunity for English majors and students from other disciplines to discuss, enjoy, and study all forms of literature and written expression.

One of the biggest events for LIS is the annual trip to Chicago to celebrate Shakespearean theater! The Shakespeare Trip is an annual trip in the Spring semester sponsored by the English Department for any student who wishes to see a play the way Shakespeare intended his work to be shared. Students of any major or discipline can participate. Usually, the group leaves on Friday by train, has group dinner before the play, watches the play in the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and goes on a chosen outing on Sunday, and returns Sunday evening. We do several fundraisers throughout the year to help our members offset the cost of participating in this event.
