Michael Lampe '14 has furthered his science education with summer jobs that are hands on, off site and collaborative. The graduating senior credits his McKendree University professors for guiding him to these opportunities. “They’re not just instructors, but mentors in life,” he says in a 90-second video on the
university website.

In 2012, Michael joined biology professor Mickey Schutzenhofer and affiliates from
Washington University to study ecosystems as part of a summer research fellowship. He collected samples and analyzed data in an ongoing investigation of species interactions under various conditions at a 2,000 acre experimental prairie and outdoor laboratory in Eureka, Mo., near St. Louis.

Photo of Michael Lampe '14“I had the opportunity to serve as a leader in the field for high school students interested in the biological sciences by working with them throughout the research,” he explained. “The experience also allowed me to lead my own independent project of investigating the effects of invasive species on biodiversity at various spatial scales. It taught me about important aspects of being an active biologist outside of the classroom.”

He presented his research at the Sigma Zeta National Convention to other science and mathematics students and faculty from around the country.

Dr. Schutzenhofer’s guidance also helped Michael secure a summer job as an air sampling technician at Environmental Consultants, LLC in 2013. He conducted air monitoring during asbestos and lead abatement projects to ensure minimal exposure for a safe environment during and after the substances’ removal.

Health and wellness are important to Michael, who plans to become a doctor and provide necessary medical care to underserved areas.
