McKendree University Graduates its Class of 2011

5/7/2011

Lebanon, Ill. — McKendree University’s 2011 graduates received their diplomas at two ceremonies during the 171st commencement exercises on May 7. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded in the morning and master’s degrees in the afternoon. A weather forecast predicting rain forced both ceremonies to take place inside the Harry Statham Gymnasium on campus. Photos

Leading the procession were new purple-and-white gonfalons—academic banners bearing the University seal and insignia of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, and School of Nursing and Health Professions. Gonfalons originated in medieval Italy as a signal of state or office but have been adopted by some universities worldwide.

Most Class of 2011 undergraduates were the first McKendree “University” freshmen when the college changed its name in 2007. The new graduates hail from 16 states and six countries.

“As members of the Class of 2011 you have accomplished and seen many things,” said Dr. James Dennis, president, citing several major awards, and recent national championships in debate and women’s bowling.

“We urged you to take advantage of all there was to do here—and you did. We’ve prepared you to do well but if a McKendree education is to be worthwhile, you must also ‘do good.’ Reach out to others, help someone, make a difference, do the right thing. I know you will do well. I challenge you to ‘do good’.”

The university is conferring a total of 894 degrees in 2011—330 master’s, 550 bachelor’s and 14 associate’s—on graduates who completed their degree requirements in August and December 2010 and May 2011. One-hundred-seventy-seven graduated with honors: 27 summa cum laude, 94 magna cum laude and 56 cum laude. Master’s degree graduates comprise 37 percent of the Class of 2011. The university offers graduate degrees in education, professional counseling, business administration and nursing.

The Class of 2011 includes 103 students from McKendree’s campuses in Louisville and Radcliff, Kentucky. Commencement exercises for these graduates will be held on June 11 at Highview Baptist Church East Campus in Louisville.

Rory Scher, a 2011 graduate from Belleville, received the Technos International College Award for demonstrating leadership, outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to promoting international understanding. Sponsored by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust, which fosters multi-cultural awareness, the award is given annually to a graduating senior chosen by the faculty.

Scher, a psychology major, was student vice president of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society chapter and a member of the Psi Chi psychology honor society. She studied abroad at Oxford University in England during the fall semester her of senior year.

The Grandy Faculty Award for outstanding service went to Dr. Peter Will, associate professor of management in the School of Business. The honor has been given since 1981 by the Alumni Association to a full-time, tenured faculty member on the Lebanon campus recommended by faculty, administrators and the senior class. It is named for Dr. William Norman Grandy, who served from 1952 to 1968 as professor of philosophy and religion, dean of students, academic dean and interim president.

Will, a Lebanon resident, has been a McKendree faculty member since 2002. In addition to teaching, he is the advisor to the Sigma Beta Delta business honor society, and the faculty athletic representative, providing leadership in the transition of McKendree’s athletic programs to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

“Few other faculty are as passionate about the value of student, faculty, and staff engagement in the life of the McKendree University community as Dr. Will,” said C. Lawrence Meggs, Alumni Association president, as he presented the award.
