McKendree University Will Offer Doctoral Program in Education

Lebanon, Ill. — McKendree University has received authorization by the Higher Learning
Commission (HLC) to offer a Doctoral Program in Education in curriculum design and
instruction.
The HLC conducted a campus visit in February with extensive review of the McKendree
program proposal. Following the review, along with multiple interviews of faculty,
staff and administrators, the commission concluded that McKendree has demonstrated
significant ability to provide a very strong and contemporary Doctoral Program in Education. The doctoral program will begin this fall and the admission process will start immediately.
Approval of the program was the result of five years of research and planning, according
to Dr. Joseph Cipfl, dean of the McKendree Graduate School. Faculty and staff were
diligent in the review and development process. A comprehensive environmental scan
and an extensive completion study were conducted in order to determine enrollment
interest.
“The McKendree doctoral program in curriculum design and instruction is not duplicated
by any other university within the region,” Cipfl noted.
The doctorate will benefit teachers and administrators by enabling them to develop
and sustain instructional programs that promote student learning and staff development.
They will learn how to manage a school district’s curricular organization, operation
and resources to produce an effective, efficient and safe learning environment. They
will be able to assess the political, social, economic, legal and cultural context
of a school district, a community, a state and nation. They will have experience in
conducting research on educational issues learning how to apply appropriate research
techniques and educational theories. Classes will be offered at the Lebanon campus.

In its 183 years of operation, the Doctoral Program in Education is the first doctoral
degree in education offered by the university. McKendree currently provides four master’s
degree programs and 40 bachelor’s degree programs.
