McKendree University is a ‘Great College to Work For’

One of 97 in U.S. Named by The Chronicle of Higher Education in 2013

Lebanon, Ill. — McKendree University remains one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The university is one of 97 in the country to receive the designation.

The results, announced by The Chronicle on July 22, are based on a survey of nearly 45,000 employees at 300 colleges and universities. In all, 97 institutions—76 four-year institutions and 21 community colleges—achieved Great College to Work For® recognition for specific best practices and policies. McKendree employees ranked the university highly in two categories related to leadership and careers: professional and career development programs, and supervisor or department chair relationship.

In six years, the Great Colleges program has become one of the largest workplace-recognition programs in the country, second only to Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Results are reported based on enrollment size for small, medium, and large institutions, with McKendree in the medium size category. Survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution; and a survey administered to full-time faculty, administrators and professional support staff. Employee feedback was the primary factor in determining Great Colleges to Work For recognition.

“The Chronicle’s reporting shows that more colleges and universities are seeking ways to improve their workplaces,” said Liz McMillen, editor. “The ‘formula for success’ continues to evolve, yet there are certain common features among institutions that achieve significant levels of worker satisfaction. The Great Colleges to Work For program allows our readers to learn about the colleges that seem to be getting it right.”

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.
