Mark Pappas' Drawings and Paintings at the McKendree Gallery of Art
Lebanon, Ill. — The McKendree University Gallery of Art announces the upcoming exhibition,
“Culture,” a selection of paintings and drawings by St. Louis artist Mark George Pappas.
His work will be displayed from Feb. 7 through March 7 at the gallery, located at
224 St. Louis St. in downtown Lebanon.
In his practice of art making and research, Pappas has come to know and befriend the
notion of “the measure of all things.” The harmonies and rhythms found throughout
his work are the visible evidence of his intense fascination with the teachings, philosophies
and arts of the ancient Greeks. Symmetries and harmonic proportions observed in the
natural world are analyzed and re-invented in his search for form.
Pappas has taught in McKendree University’s art program. A historic preservationist
as well as a teacher and artist, he is deeply involved in the restoration of the Beaux-Arts
Carnegie Library in the Hyde Park neighborhood of St. Louis. While maintaining the
historic integrity of the building’s original design, he is working to establish studio,
exhibition and educational space there.
He has travelled extensively in Greece and has had numerous exhibitions of his work
there and in the U.S. He received his M.F.A. from Queens College of the City University
of New York, a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute.
