(LEBANON, Ill., May 12, 2018) — McKendree University Class of 2018 graduates received their diplomas during the 178th commencement exercises on May 12 at the Lebanon, Ill., campus.

The new graduates hail from 26 states and eight countries. They include the first graduates of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Ethical Leadership and Master of Arts in Criminal Justice degree programs. The university is conferring 714 degrees at its Illinois and Kentucky campuses in 2018—17 doctorates, seven education specialists, 196 master’s, 489 bachelor’s and five associate degrees—on students who completed their program requirements in December 2017, and in May and July 2018. A total of 154 graduated with honors: 20 summa cum laude, 81 magna cum laude and 53 cum laude.

“You’ve made us proud; we’ve made you prepared,” said Dr. James Dennis, university president. “There is so much to be done in this world and you now are ready to ‘make your mark’ beyond McKendree.”

One of its most talented and accomplished alumni, operatic soprano Christine Brewer, received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree for her extraordinary lifetime accomplishments and continued commitment to her alma mater. She graduated with honors in 1976, earning a bachelor’s degree in music education-vocal performance. Heralded by BBC Music magazine as “one of the top 20 sopranos of all time,” she has performed on world’s great stages and won a Grammy Award in 2005. The Lebanon, Ill., resident gives master classes to McKendree music students and often performs at the university’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts.

“She is a cultural jewel of the metro-east and St. Louis region, and a lifelong ambassador for her alma mater,” said the president. Brewer sang “Mira (Can You Imagine That?)” from the Broadway musical “Carnival” to close the undergraduate ceremony.

Jessica Lirios, of Greenville, Ill., an honors program student who graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology, received the 2018 Technos International Prize, given by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust for academic achievement and international understanding.

“Jessie is an outstanding student and an emerging global citizen who clearly feels a calling to improve international understanding one person at a time,” said Dr. Christine Bahr, provost and dean. In August, Lirios will embark on an 11-month mission trip to 11 countries in Central America, Africa and Asia as part of the World Race discipleship program.

The Alumni Association gave the 2018 William Norman Grandy Faculty Award to Dr. Nichole DeWall, associate professor of English and a McKendree faculty member since 2008. DeWall teaches courses in Shakespeare, English composition, British literature, dramatic literature and research. An accomplished scholar in her field, she has published 10 book chapters or journal articles and given nearly 30 presentations to professional audiences.

“Students describe her as positive, caring, passionate—and she makes Shakespeare fun,” said Alumni Association President Maria Page. “She strives to help them not only to learn, but to delight in the reading of literature.”

The newest lifetime members of the university community are Dr. Feza Ozturk, professor of chemistry, who has retired after 29 years; and Dr. Betsy Gordon, professor of speech communication, who retired in December after more than 27 years at McKendree. Each were awarded the rank of Professor Emerita.

Commencement exercises for graduates at the McKendree University campuses in Radcliff and Shepherdsville, Ky., will be held on June 2 at First Christian Church in Elizabethtown, Ky.
