McKendree University Congratulates its Class of 2024 Graduates

(LEBANON, Ill., May 15, 2024) – Members of the Class of 2024 received their diplomas at three separate ceremonies on Friday, May 10 at the Lebanon, Ill., campus – the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Education at 10 a.m.; the School of Business and School of Nursing and Health Professions at 1:30 p.m.; and all postgraduate students at 4:30 p.m.

The university is conferring an anticipated total of 595 degrees - 20 doctoral, 181 master’s, 376 bachelor’s, 9 specialist and 8 associate degrees – on students who completed or will complete their program requirements in December 2023 and May and July 2024. A total of 108 students graduated with Latin honors (pending final grades for the spring and summer terms): 33 summa cum laude, 46 magna cum laude and 29 cum laude. Seven of these students completed the university’s Honors Program. The new graduates represent 30 states and 19 countries and territories.

“Today, I am struck by a memory of what didn’t happen four years ago, and the increased import on today’s ceremony for many of you. I remember August four years ago, meeting some of you for the first time and how you rejoiced at the opportunity to be here and start your journey at McKendree and to be able to interact face to face,” said Daniel C. Dobbins ’81, president of McKendree University. “For 196 years, this institution has provided learning opportunities for students who have gone on to help shape the world we live in. The Class of 2024 will no doubt do the same.”

Four professors retired from the university: Dr. Julie Smirl, assistant professor of counseling and director of clinical mental health counseling; Dr. Janet Wicker, professor of education; Dr. Richelle Rennegarbe, professor of nursing and director of DNP programs; and Dr. Martha McDonald, associate professor of nursing. Dr. Wicker, Dr. Rennegarbe and Dr. McDonald were awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus to become the newest lifetime members of the university community.

Maria Vitoria Salomao, an international relations major from Lagoa Santa, Brazil, received the 2024 Technos International Prize. It is given each year by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust for outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to the cause of international understanding. Salomao is the captain of the women’s tennis team, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the president of the International Student Organization, a New Student Orientation leader, an office assistant for the Office of Development, Alumni and Parent Relations, and a resident assistant. She is also the president of the Student Government Association and genuinely cares for everyone she meets. She is constantly seen doing things for others on campus. She plans on interning at Global Merges and Acquisitions at BUNZL until August, at which point she will be working toward her master’s degree and playing tennis for her fifth year.

Dr. Brian Frederking ’90, professor of political science, received the William Norman Grandy Faculty Award from the Alumni Association. It recognizes commitment to students, the ideals promoted by the university and participation in the community it serves. A past winner of the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award and the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award, Dr. Frederking is known for his commitment to teaching and his service and leadership on various committees, including the faculty senate. He frequently presents at McKendree’s Brown Bag events on campus and has also been leader of Model UN activities on campus for over 20 years.

Additionally, President Dobbins recognized outgoing board members Mike Gauble ’66 and The Reverend Robert H. “Bob” Edwards ‘57. Gauble has been the longest serving Board of Trustee member as he began serving in 1980. He served on the Student Affairs Committee of the board for many years. Rev. Edwards joined the Board of Trustees first in 1979 and then in 1992. He has served on nearly every committee of the board. Both outgoing board members were awarded trustee emeritus status for their dedication and service.

Photos for the 2024 ceremonies will be posted online at mckendree.edu/photos.
