This award is unique among popular college guide classifications, which often rank schools on endowment size, selectivity and faculty salaries. McKendree has earned this recognition incorporating high-impact practices throughout every student’s undergraduate education. These student-centered programs include service learning, alternative spring breaks, cultural immersion and mission trips, social justice and equity programs, interdisciplinary programs, undergraduate research, capstone projects, study abroad opportunities, internships and more.

“Colleges of Distinction knows students learn and thrive best when they embrace hands-on learning in a vibrant, welcoming community,” said Tyson Schritter, the organization’s chief operating officer. “That’s why it’s so encouraging to find McKendree takes such an innovative approach with its curriculum: its high-impact educational practices ensure that the undergraduate experience is worthwhile and unique.”

The selection process consists of detailed interviews and research for each institution’s first-year experience and retention efforts, as well as its general education programs, career development, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, a vibrant community, and successful outcomes.

“Colleges of Distinction doesn’t rank schools, because we know that every student is different in what they need to best learn, grow and succeed,” said Schritter. “Instead, we value schools that embrace those differences.
