Daytime Programs at the Hett Introduce Children to the Arts

Puppetry, International Music and Hip Hop in Spring 2020

(LEBANON, Ill., November 20, 2019) — The Arts Education series at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts offers a variety of daytime performances at reduced prices for young audiences in grades K-12.

Liz Crabtree, director of the Hett, encourages school groups to attend. “These performances help students meet the Illinois Arts Learning Standards for responding and connecting to the arts,” she said. Three performances in spring 2020 are as follows:

Friday, March 6, 10 a.m.: “The Rainbow Fish” presented by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. Recommended for children in grades K-5, “The Rainbow Fish” will enchant even the youngest child with his silver scales and heart of gold. Innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects and original music interpret the tale of a beautiful fish who learns to share his most prized possession. Based on an award-winning book by Marcus Pfister, its sweet message has resonated with children, parents, teachers, librarians and booksellers around the world.

Thursday, March 19, 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.: “Music from Around the World” Young’s People Concert. Take a one-hour international journey through music and video presented by the McKendree University Department of Music. Recommended for grades K-12.

Monday, April 6 at 10 a.m.: “Hip Hop Culture 101” presented by The ReMINDers. Explore the origins, evolution and contemporary expression of hip-hop music and culture. The duo will introduce the five core elements of hip-hop: DJing, breaking, MCing, graffiti art and knowledge. The ReMINDers have shared the stage with Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Fishbone, Nas, Mos Def, Big Boi and others. For grades K-12.
