Speech and Debate Team Takes Third at Southwest Baptist University

(LEBANON, Ill., October 12, 2017) - The McKendree University speech and debate team took home ten awards across two tournaments last weekend, including third place in team sweepstakes at Southwest Baptist University.

Sixteen colleges and universities, including the University of Nebraska, Texas Christian University and Belmont College, attended Southwest Baptist University’s speech and debate tournament on Oct. 6-7. Representing McKendree were senior Brett Hanna; juniors Justin Fausz and Aliyah Smith; and sophomores Kate Maag and Isa Scaturro.

Scaturro took first place in after dinner speaking - taking straight 1s in all her rounds. She also took fourth in drama, as well as second in duo with Smith. Smith finished second in her other events as well - programmed oral interpretation and poetry. Hanna placed fourth in after dinner speaking and sixth in prose. Fausz posted a 2-2 record in Lincoln-Douglas debate, just missing the break to elims. McKendree took third place in team sweepstakes.

Fifteen colleges and universities, including Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois, attended the speech tournaments hosted by Illinois State University and Bradley University on Oct. 7-8. Representing McKendree were senior Emma Webster, junior Andrew Wagner, and sophomore Grace Alexander. Wagner finished in fifth place in both impromptu speaking and individual sweepstakes.

The McKendree team will compete next at its home tournament on Oct. 20-22.
