Streetscapes and Still Life Paintings at the Hett

‘I Think I See What I Thought I Saw’ by Michael Neary on Display through Jan. 31

Lebanon, Ill. — “I Think I See What I Thought I Saw,” an exhibit of streetscape and still life oil paintings by St. Louis artist Michael Neary, are on display through Jan. 31 at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. The lobby gallery is open on weekdays during box office hours from noon to 4 p.m., and during special events at the Hett.

Neary is a plein air artist who works on location when the weather permits. In this exhibition, five canvasses capture the natural light and color of street corners in Terre Haute, Ind. and Hastings, Neb. Two still life compositions challenge the imagination with common yet symbolic images.

A member of the Midwest Paint Group, his work is on permanent display at the Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery in Terre Haute and also at Graham Gallery in Hastings. He has participated in exhibitions throughout the Midwest and taught art appreciation and art history in the Indiana state prisons. A graduate of Indiana University and the Kansas City Art Institute, he also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Neary is married to painter Amy MacLennan, an art instructor at McKendree University.

Meet the artist at a reception on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hett. Admission is free.

After the exhibit concludes, the Gateway East Artists Guild will display its members’ work at the Hett from Feb. 1 through Mar. 5.
